Baskets and weavings

Basketry is an ancient craft: all over the world humans have been making baskets ever since the need to carry things was first recognised! The oldest discovered baskets have been carbon dated to 12,000 years ago, but of course the transient organic nature of the material means they are perishable, and the craft is likely to be far far older. Across the globe people have devised different techniques for working with their local materials - and some uncannily similar methods have evolved. Every time you start a weaving project you are connecting with this incredibly ancient practice.

Below is a selection of traditional and not-so-traditional basketry and weaving projects we’ve made from dried or green willow, peeled or bark on, as well as rush, and other found materials.
